My final for RISD’s XX/XY class— an illustration course addressing topics of gender.

I decided to make a comic using the characters from my pet project, since I take every excuse to expand upon that. But also because the things I create with my characters are always made with gender topics in mind. Even though I never address any of these issues in the body of the comic itself, there is something inherently gender-charged about having no male main characters… about having a female character who is fairly gender-neutral… about allowing one’s female characters to be silly, ugly, clumsy, funny— things that are girls are not usually “allowed” to be, even in cartoons—as well as independent, friendly, likeable, living their lives for themselves and not as some ancillary character to speed the plot. You also think a lot about gender when you’re a girl who’s looking out at the world, thinking about how she is going to make it in comics or in animation.

okok! getting off the soapbox though, I also wanted to make a vignette that showed a slightly more subdued side of my characters, and hinted at some of their underlying issues etc. because I will never address that in the main story arcs. (the main arcs being frantic/cartoony/slapstick and fun, and there’s really no place in them for abandonment issues or feelings of inadequacy or any of that lol.) I’d like to do more of these as exercises of character development and maybe intersperse them between arcs of the comic proper, to reveal more about them as time goes on.

tl;dr I MADE A COMIC YAY

oh yeah… and also, they drink animal milk in their universe and (almost) no one breastfeeds. hur hur!
